| Today Harper Woods High school had a visit from ADE Dr. Robbie Melton. I met Robbie at ADE (Apple Distinguished Educator) 2017 summer event in Houston, I was very impressed with her emerging technology display she showcased. As I talked with Robbie I learned she was also from Michigan, where she went to school on Detroit’s east side. Robbie offered to visit our High School and present when she was in town, I took full advantage of that offer, and oh what a visit it was. This year Harper Woods Schools has started 3 new CTE programs. Robbie’s visit was a perfect opportunity to see the many different products that are infusing technology and coding to enhance our lives. The first item Robbie showed was a technology infused basketball and net. This device will feed information to users on correcting aim, head position and distance of the shot taken with the ball. The students were amazed at the feedback that could be given by a basket ball. After getting their attention, Robbie showed students an array of technology from wearable nails, to coded PJ’s that read stories to children, to holographic phones. All of the examples were grounded in how coding impacts our lives. Robbie also talked to students about social skills that students need to know to succeed in business and life. Robbie greeting everyone who entered the room for the presentation. She enforced the interpersonal skills that are needed to communicate and collaborate with others. “It’s not all about the tech skills, you need people skills too”. She told the room. I spoke with students after the presentation, and they had no idea that coding could be used in so many products and devices. The visit really showed students what possibilities are available to them. |
