| As an Technology Coach I work with students at every grade level. I enjoy going into all of the classes, but there is something special about going into 1st grade class. These young students are all energy and eager to learn. For today’s activity, I combined Popplet with Math. In this the students were working on addition. To start this activity students used there “10 Frame” card and markers. The teacher verbally told the class “Show me what six plus four looks like”. Students used red markers for the 6, and yellow markers for the 4. Once everyone finished I showed students how to use the camera on the iPad to take a picture of their work. We reviewed were the camera lens was, how to hold the iPad, and how to make sure it was on the photo setting. After a picture was taken, students cleared off their 10 frame card and were giving the next problem to visualize, and students took another picture. We did this about 3 times to start with. Next we moved into Popplet. If you have never used Popplet before, its a simple app to develop mind maps and show relationships between topics, or concepts. We created a popple, the first box to start our web, and students placed their name in the box. Next we added a popple and placed one of our 10 frame pictures into the box. Below the picture we added another popple and students type the math problem they created. After a little practice, students were building the webs with their math problems. The classroom teacher was surprised how quickly the students were able to learn the program and build the webs, and excited to have her class do more activities like this. I like these types of activities because it introduces iPad basics to students that are easily and quickly applied to a project. If you like to learn more about Popplet: Click Here |
